6 Benefits of Group Counseling

Individual counseling, family counseling, group counseling are crucial elements of effective substance abuse and mental health treatment. There are more than six benefits of group counseling, but the below list is a good barometer of what you can expect to gain.

  1. Group counseling has been known to help with social skills and can help erase the feeling of isolation.
  2. Groups provide support. Other people have the same problems and challenges that you are faced with daily. Hearing from them help you realize that you are not alone.
  3. Sometimes you need a sounding board and people to listen to what you are going through.  Having a group that listens, can widen your perspective on your situation and help you deal with problems in a better way.
  4. Group Counseling can speed up your recovery.  Sometimes patients will be encouraged, try harder and push themselves more when they see what the other members of the group are accomplishing. Many patients feel like no one understands what they are going through and a group dynamic of peers can change this.
  5. Learn more about you.  When you see others in the group with the same symptoms and issues you have, it’s like holding up a mirror and seeing yourself.  In this way, you can uncover things you do not see that may be blocking progress.
  6. There is strength in numbers and having more people rooting for you can make life’s difficult changes a little easier. Being part of this community also allows you to be a cheerleader for the others. This mutual support that not only helps them but feels good.

A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.1  You may not change the world, but you may help each other.
